LEON MACLAREN was leader and teacher in the School of Economic Science from 1937 until his death in 1994. Drawing particularly on a series of conversations he had with Shri Shantananda Saraswati, Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math in northern India between 1965 and 1993, he gave regular lectures to students in the School in which he expounded a philosophy of unity which became central to the work of the School. The lectures were always extempore and it was his constant endeavour to speak from the unity of the Self and to let the light of that unity illuminate whatever was under consideration. This collection of short extracts from those lectures offers a reminder of Leon MacLaren's thought and of the philosophy he practised.
