The letters contained in this volume follow chronologically from those in volume I, first published in translation in 1975. This second volume consists of the sixty-six letters Ficino published in his Book III, which he dedicated to Matthias Corvinus, the King of Hungary, whom he regarded as a model of the philosopher king referred to by Plato in his Republic.  Those readers not familiar with Ficino and his letters may find this extract from reviews of Volume I of interest.

`Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) was at the very fountainhead of some of the most characteristic and influential aspects of the Italian Renaissance. He perhaps more than anyone else was responsible for popularising the writings of Plato and other writers of Platonic inspiration for a very wide range of     readers in his own and later centuries ...

Included in his circle of correspondents were many of the leading lights of Medicean Florence.'   C. B. Schmitt in the Times Literary Supplement
